Knot Area Ratio (KAR) is a term used to describe the cross sectional area of a knot relative to the area surrounding, as a percentage. For grading purposes it is an estimate, calculated by adding the width of a knot on the top surface of a piece of timber, added to the width that knot on the bottom of the surface and then divided by 2.
